    I have a confession to make: I love meat. I like it so much that I wrote a book about it. But in spite of my love for meat, my prescription for how to eat and how to live is vegetarianism. To be clear, I am not denying the importance of meat in our diets (I find it important as a source of protein and as an important part of a balanced diet), but rather that we should eat only plant-based foods — including grass-fed beef.
    In this post, I want to explore what this means for health — specifically, the role meat plays in human health (and the health of animals).
    First, let’s consider what plant-based eating is. The term “vegetarian” is often used to describe people who choose not to eat any animal products (including meats) at all. This can be done with respect to food, meaning that people eat differently from vegetarians on nutritional grounds. For example:
    • It’s okay if you can only afford chicken or fish occasionally because you are doing your body good by not eating animals — and sometimes even if you have no money at all because you are doing your body good by not eating those animals.

    • You can still enjoy dairy products because they are good sources of calcium and also contain vitamin D.
    The term “vegetarian” has been described as “relatively meaningless” or “faux vegetarianism”; however, many people say they are vegetarians even though they don’t eat any animal products at all for various reasons: their friends/family/significant others don’t agree; their religion dictates against it; or their culture links meat consumption with violence and aggression among other negative behaviors — making the option of abstaining from consuming animal products difficult or even impossible for some people. These reasons may be valid but do not necessarily make one vegetarian or another one non-vegetarian (since some may engage in both vegetarianism and killing some animals while being vegan).
